Introduction
As most free patterns published by Sweet Nothings Crochet are in the form of filet grids, here is a quick tutorial on filet crochet.
Basic Terminology
The stitches in filet crochet are called meshes. There are two types: open meshes and closed meshes. Both have the same multiple in any given project.
A half-double mesh is a mesh consisting of (US) half-double crochet as the structural stitch. It is used to create a finer mesh than the double mesh, which uses (US) double crochet as the structural stitch. Larger meshes can also be created.
Determining the Multiple
Like many crochet projects, filet uses a multiple. For half-double mesh, the multiple is two, for double, it's three, and so on. Therefore, the number of chain stitches in the first row is the multiple times the number of meshes in the first horizontal row plus the ending stitch, or mn+1.
As an example, we'll take this heart filet grid, using an hdc(half-double) mesh:
Because it is a half-double mesh, m=2.
The number of meshes in the first horizontal row is eleven, so n=11.
2*11+1=23, so the first row is ch 23.
Open and Closed Meshes
A mesh consists of m number of stitches, beginning with the structural stitch. A closed mesh follows the structural stitch with more stitches of the same type, while an open mesh follows the structural stitch with chain stitches. For example, in a half-double mesh, a closed mesh consists of two half-double stitches, and an open mesh consists of a half-double stitch followed by a chain.
Where | represents the structural stitch type and _ represents a chain, the most common meshes can be visually represented as follows:
Half-double:
*Open: | _
*Closed: | |
Double:
*Open: | _ _
*Closed: | | |
Ending a Row
A row of meshes is always ended by one final stitch of the same type as the structural stitch, effectively closing the row.
The final mesh in a given row can be visually represented as follows:
Half-double:
*Open: | _ |
*Closed: | | |
Double:
*Open: | _ _ |
*Closed: | | | |
And that's it. Try finishing up the heart motif for your first filet crochet project, and have fun with projects to come!
